    Hot Macbook

There's an overtemp sensor in the machine which should shut it down if it reaches a dangerous temperature. But I'd prefer to stress the machine as little as necessary in the interest of making it last a long time without any problems, hence my cooler. I did have an Powerbook G3 which used...

    Hot Macbook

Sure: http://www.xpcgear.com/notebookcooler.html I don't know how much good the heat pipes really do but just lifting the machine with the perforated platform allows air to circulate under it. I like it because there's no power needed and no noise. edit: I added some legs fabricated out...

    Hot Macbook

I've used a laptop cooler for a long time. I have a passive one (no fans) and it makes a significant difference.

PDf in Safari keeps asking which acrobat to use

Download the latest version of Adobe Reader. That should be as easy as starting the version you have and checking for updates under its Help menu. There was an update this week so unless you've already updated it will update. Make sure you quit any browsers before it updates. You can also...

    Lost Preview

You can use Pacifist to extract the Preview app from your OS X DVD and reinstall it. Interestingly the description on MacUpdate specifically mentions Preview.app (You can use it for free with limitations.)

    Help with new Mac

Change it back to what it was. Then using that account create a new user for yourself with admin privileges. There are other options but they can get complicated, do the above first. Edit: Here's one article - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428 Also read: http://www.danfrakes.com/ , the...

    snow leopard running damn slow!!!

That's good, the maintentance utilities still need to run though. If for some reason you machine isn't running them (sleeping or off when they would run) you should run them. Have a look at this page: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html See the section on Determining when the...

"Cookies not enabled" but they are!

It might be a problem with those sites. It's easy for a web developer to screw up cookie configurations. Care to give us a link?

My macbook hates my router but imac is fine?

I added several replies to this thread: http://macosx.com/forums/mac-os-x-system-mac-software/313412-airport-netgear-dg834g.html I was having similar types of problems and eventually got everything working just fine on my Mac. Please post back here or to that thread if anything helps you...

    Airport Stopped Working....Please Help!

I added quite a few posts to this thread: AirPort & netgear dg834g. Don't worry if your router isn't NetGear, mine isn't either, I have LinkSys. The solutions and tips are generic and they're things I picked up over several months trying to fix an unreliable WiFi connection. I have it working...

    AirPort & netgear dg834g

In my quest to make this the go-to thread for WiFi / AirPort solutions and tips I'll add another trick I use. Most people are probably familiar with the Network Diagnostics app which will appear if Safari is stalled when trying to reach a site. It's a pretty useful little app and it provides a...

[HOWTO] Update firmware on Linksys router

This is a really old thread and its instructions probably are no longer relevant since newer Linksys routers have a firmware update mechanism in their web based GUI. What model router do you have?

    AirPort & netgear dg834g

I'm posting some more info from another thread, I'm just trying to make this a comprehensive thread. Those quotes are from this thread. The order of services is something I'd never checked. You can set the order by clicking the gear icon in Network Prefs and choosing set order. Mine was...

    AirPort & netgear dg834g

You just have to simplify everything till you get it working correctly, the console display helps a lot. Delete any saved stuff (locations etc) for Airport in Network prefs and start fresh, it's not hard. It's very possible to set up conflicts in there, I've done it.

    AirPort & netgear dg834g

I'm going to go ahead and make this thread long :p because it may help more people. Another thing I noticed was a lot of blued crashes, blued is the Bluetooth daemon. I used to use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse but went to wired ones and turned Bluetooth completely off in Prefs. Well, that...

    AirPort & netgear dg834g

That's not so easy. You have to eliminate things which might cause the system to “hunt”. In my case it seemed to be that I had both AES and TKIP enabled and I'd always see it set keys twice. Another thing I did was manually set the machine's IP address in the Network Control Panel. I choose...
