You can partition with Disk Utility. I would not partition my internal. As others have indicated/implied, having, and partitioning, a firewire external is "must" these days for safety/convenience/experimentation/disaster recovery/back up/etc.

I am not sure where your uncertainty lies. Normally, one would connect an external drive to a computer's firewire or USB port, open the drive's icon on the desktop by double clicking, drag the desired files into the now open drive window, and drop them there.
