Microsoft has taken over my computer.. Well almost

I feel your pain. :) It looks like the daemon gets launched with any Office app; I get the popups after I've run Word, for instance. It's really annoying since I haven't synced with Entourage in something like 6 months, so all the reminders are about recurring meetings that are no longer...

Newbie Question: Using modprobe and a SCSI controller

The proper syntax for the example you cited would be 'modprobe qla1280' - without the .o extension. AFAIK, the driver will not show up in lsmod unless the driver detects the hardware correctly. Either way, you can tail /var/log/messages to check what happens when you try to load up the module...

    IRC client?

I like X-Chat too... It's very configurable; even the CTCP responses can be tuned to whatever you want them to say. It's avaliable on all major platforms (Win, Linux, MacOSX, *BSD, whatever), and is reasonably consistent in form and function across all of those... Oh, and it's free... :D

    Microsoft Office v.X License Agreement

No, it isn't reinstated. Car analogies are very common, and most of them only work to a certain point. Let me try and illustrate why. Yes, it costs something to initially produce the software - the developer(s) spend time and are (ideally) rewarded by getting paid, whether directly through the...

SHaring internet connection to a PC?

Go to Control Panel... Network Connections.. Double-click the connection for your ethernet card, then click "Properties" You should see a dialog similar to this: The important bits are highlighted - make sure that both DNS and IP are obtained automatically... Edit: Gah... so inline images...

SHaring internet connection to a PC?

Simple. Go to System Preferences... sharing. On the "internet" tab, turn on sharing. Also, make sure that your firewall settings (firewall tab) will allow the appropriate traffic through; otherwise the PC won't be able to connect. On the PC, simply set it for DHCP (automatic) settings for...

    Missing (close,min,max) window buttons

It looks like you've been doing theming (either Milk or a de-lined aqua). Could be that the theme you're using is messing with the widgets. Not all of the themes are broken, though. I'm using the metal theme through Duality, and my widgets are fine (see attachment). Does it do it if you use a...

    Microsoft Office v.X License Agreement

My thoughts exactly. Thanks... ;) I'm in a similar situation. I've got OfficeX installed on my G4 desktop and my iBook. I'm the only one using these machines, but if I forget to shut down Excel on my desktop, I can't run Word on my iBook. I'm not about to pay for a second copy, so the little...

    OSX on my PC?

Probably not. From the project page: A 2.5 year old project placeholder that's never posted any files is, IMO, not likely to ever release anything. Even the winmac-dev mailing list sits at zero.. "Nothing to see here. Move along." If marklar ever marklars this marklar, Marklar will marklar...

    Show us your ride!

The Scoobies use a horizontally-opposed 4... That is, the cylinders are laid on their side (horizontally), with 2 on each side (opposed). The design is also refered to as "boxer", and has turned up in older VW's and Porches over the years. They're also known as "flat-4"...

have we had one on the death penalty? (for the humour-impaired - it's a joke)... :D

    Show us your ride!

Well, I doubt it'll be anywhere near 40k - probably low 30's. But one thing I do know is that it won't be a V4. It'll be the same boxer engine design that the rest of the line uses. 2.5L sounds right.

    Should the US go metric?

...for temperature, at least... It annoys the hell out of everyone around me when they ask, "So, how is it outside?" And I say, "It's nice, sunny, 20 degrees".. :D

    Show us your ride!

Everyone seems to post beauty shots in these kinds of threads, but I thought I do a little different... I drove 8 hours yesterday into the Pittsburgh, PA area, where there's been snow, and slagged/salted roads, and it's made my little car very very dirty. It's an '02 Subaru WRX wagon, and I...

EVERYONE on this planet should read this!

This "love it or leave it" kind of mentality is both simplistic and dangerous. It is (as another poster mentioned) the sort of thing that the Nazis told the Jews back in the day. But worse than that, it ignores an essential part of what has made the US what it is. First, this sentiment is a...

How come nobody mentioned this? ColdFusion on OSX?

No. Macromedia absolutely does charge per-CPU... I missed that comment in TommyWillB's post ("Most of its competetors charge per CPU, so in comparison this is cheap."), or I'd have commented on this earlier. A little research on MM's site reveals: JRun 4: 1 cpu - $899 2 cpu - $1799 4 cpu -...

how is performance of 10.2.3 on 233/266/333 iMac?

I have 10.2.3 on an old 266 iMac. It's no screamer, to say the least, but it's usable. There's no way it's gonna ever do heavy multimedia, but it does ok with the usual suspects - email, web, irc, office apps. With an iMac of this vintage, processor upgrades are may not be terribly cost...

    IP printing on OSX

A thought... What sort of printer is it? "Printing out garbage" suggests to me sending postscript to a non-postscript printer or vice-versa. I've got an HP2100TN, and it works perfectly with the supplied drivers in 10.2..
