    MacOS X.4 User Interface Idea

oh dear. What needs to be changed in th Finder before anything else is the chaotic way it handles windows. Ever since the launch of OS X the Finder has been bad and it hasn't really fundamentally been improved - it's still a mix between a file browser and the old type of spatial Finder. It's...

Codename for the successor of 'Panther'?

I'm starting to get confused by the meaning of the these names... :D I'd assumed that 'panther' refered to a black leopard, because that's what it means in British English (and many other languages). However now I have learnt that in the US it is also a synonym for 'puma', which in turn is also...

    Gimp in X11 [Panther]

In Panther the X11 SDK is on the Xcode CD. I guess can just install that if you don't want the full developer tools. By default the X11 SDK is not selected, so it can easily be missed.

iTunes 4.1.1 is out (Windows only)

I think the update addresses some issues reported on some configurations. If you don't have issues, you probably don't need to update ;)

Should I update last weeks 7B85?

Since 7B85 should be exactly is the same as the retail build, I don't see why you should do a complete wipe and install. I did a Archive & Install just in case, but I doubt that was necessary, either.

    Icon spacing in Panther

I've found the best way around this problem is choosing "label position: right" from the Finder View prefs. Unfortunately this doesn't really work for the desktop, though, as the result looks rather crappy.

    Startup time

On a 400 MHz iMac DV it took exactly a minute from power on to the Finder (with autologin). Pretty impressive. I've also noted that application launch times are significantly faster on Panther.

Panther to be released Oct 24 ! Official

Hmm, seems I wasn't entirely correct about them scrapping the "10.3". At least the Panther Overview (http://www.apple.com/macosx/overview/) mentions the version number.

Panther to be released Oct 24 ! Official

It's interesting that Apple seems to be calling it simply "Mac OS X Panther", without the 10.3. If they continue with this line, it will allow them to use the "X" indefinitely. They'll eventually run out of big cats, though :D

    Longhorn Release Date...woot.

This is great news! Does it work in icon and column view as well as in list view?

    Longhorn Release Date...woot.

Whether it is a service or an actual new filesystem doesn't change the fact that it is new, and by the sound of it anyway, an extremely good idea. I don't think you quite understood me - the new Finder does look like iTunes, yes. What I meant was that just like you can browse your music...

    Longhorn Release Date...woot.

I hear the next version of Windows will have a database-based filesystem instead of the familiar files-inside-folders we've grown use to. If this is true, it is certainly something to look forward to, whether it is Microsoft doing it or not. If you don't get what I mean, here's an explanation...

There IS a dual boot solution!

Why is all this necessary? I simply dragged the Panther partition to the trash to unmount it and it accomplished the same thing.

    Brushed metal initiative

I for one find it unbelievable that someone would actually complain that software is downwards-compatible. How, may I ask, does the continued existence of OS 9 have a negative impact on your life? Everyone isn't rich, and everyone doesn't necessarily want to buy a new computer every three years...

    I'm a pirate, but I don't want to be

    You're probably right there.

    I'm a pirate, but I don't want to be

Well, I see your point, but I am not attempting to justify piracy. I simply wanted to bring out a different view. I disagree. In many cases, buing the software is simply not an alternative, because a student simply would never have the money. Look, no one with a tight budget is going to buy...

    I'm a pirate, but I don't want to be

I thought it might be good to point out that if you're considering buing student priced software, the licence is usually limited to "educational" use, ie. if you use it to make money it is no more legal than using a pirated copy.

    I'm a pirate, but I don't want to be

Hmm, just a few thoughts - although in an ethical sense it might be just as wrong to pirate software or steal, say, a camera, I don't see how pirating software for non-professional purposes hurts the company making the software, in a situation where the person really wouldn't be able to afford...

installing 10.3 broke some things in 10.2

I had the same problem as boi - Panther on a separate partition, same drive though. To solve the problem I simply unmounted the Panther partition - just drag it to the trash. Of course you'll need to do this every time you restart, but I hardly ever do that, so it's not an issue.

    Spreading like wildfire...

I sincerely hope Apple will eventually include Smart Folders in Finder - I understand this feature has been somehow implemented into XCode, but in the Finder it would be very useful and sensible.
