    Please Answer Quickly XFree86

you need to launch it from your ~/.xinitrc file. See Fink's documentation on installing XDarwin for more details. Or you can do it manually by setting the DISPLAY environment variable and launching it. export DISPLAY=:0.0 blackbox (assuming that blackbox is the command used to...

Create Soft Links From Mac OS 9?

yeah, that was my plan (booting of the os-x install cd in single-user mode) if all else fails. But I'd still like to know if it's possible from OS 9.

Create Soft Links From Mac OS 9?

Anyone know how to create or modify soft links from Mac OS 9? I'm trying to fix a problem in X, but I can't boot into X for various reasons. I need to do something like 'ln -s path linkpath' from within Mac OS 9.

    Do you like the dock?

I have two major power-user problems with the dock. When I'm working, I'm fast enough that I'm generally several steps ahead of the computer at all times. But since the location of items in the dock changes, I can't just let muscle-memory take me to an item and then click - I have to actually...

    Windows Terminal Client

I suggest reading fink's documentation on installing XWindows. It's at Fink's documentation page . But if you've never installed XWindows before and you've got a working installation of fink, you can do the following. Type 'sudo dselect' to enter the dselect program. Choose option 1 to...

    file manager?

Well, I installed xfree86-base using fink, so I didn't see this problem. But I'd guess that gtk+ is looking for a different version of xfree86 than the one you've got installed. Try using 'sudo dselect', choosing option 3, marking gtk+ for installation (by selection it and hitting the 'plus'...

    file manager?

Fink has a "placeholder" package of xfree86 for people that installed XDarwin without using fink. Check out this link for more info.

    Windows Terminal Client

The fink command will download the source, patch it (if necessary) to run on mac os x, compile it, and install it. All with one command. That's why people think fink is kewl :) But if you don't have XDarwin installed, it'll probably complain and ask you if you want to install that, too...

    Windows Terminal Client

I just noticed that fink knows about this program. Try sudo fink install rdesktop

    Mac OS X VNC *CLIENT*

Okeedokey. I've started the process of getting a membership on versiontracker and I'll post it there once they've let me (assuming that the original developer has no objections - IIRC, the program is under the gnu license, so he shouldn't). Stay tuned for more info ;)

    file manager?

I don't get it - any GUI file manager you pick will need xfree86-base installed - that is XDarwin. Or did you install the standalone, non-fink version of XDarwin?

    how about COMPLETE MULTITHREADING

If I'm not mistaken, the Be operating system did something like this. Everything was a thread. I have no idea how it worked though, since I never actually used the operating system. But yeah, it's mainly the programmer's responsibility on to do this on the Mac.

    Mac OS X VNC *CLIENT*

I've updated an old NeXT client to run under Mac OS X and I've been using it for my VNC needs. If there's interest, I'll get permision from the original developer (whoever the hell that was) and throw it up on version tracker. It works pretty well.

    Metadata woes with OS X

The problem is that Apple is discouraging developers from using metadata in new projects. Many (Carbon) applications still use type/creator metadata, but not all apps do - there's no consistency and it makes users confused. There are lots of other problems with Apple's current...

    what does void mean!?

'void' basically means that the variable is untyped. Generally, you use it in variable declarations when you're passing a pointer to a function and the function doesn't need to have any knowledge of what the variable points to. So, instead of having the function just pick some arbitrary type...

    Baffling problem w/ IE 5!

Katrina - well, it's pretty much trash the prefs and see if that fixes it or reinstall os x and try again. I'm still inclined to think it's a hardware problem, too, btw. testuser - I'm using 10.1.2. Only some Carbon applications have this option, e.g. GraphicConverter. But it's there...

    Baffling problem w/ IE 5!

Hi Katrina! Never mind about the Get Info thing. Some applications have it, some don't and IE is one of the ones that doesn't. I wasn't at my Mac when I wrote that  You can use Pacifist to pull just Internet Explorer out of your Mac OS X install CD to see if it works that way. It...

    Show .app extension? How?!

Wow, having to patch the Finder is a seriously ugly solution. I mean, no offence to you, it's cool that you found it, but it's really lame that Apple didn't provide a less ugly way of showing the 'app'... Bad Apple Bad!

    Baffling problem w/ IE 5!

Hi Katrina, If you control-click on your OS X version of Internet Explorer and choose Show Info, there's a checkbox that lets you launch applications in Classic instead of OS X. That may have gotten checked somehow. I'm not sure, but it sounded like you were keeping your OS X IE somewhere...
