    best e-mail client

I keep finding things to like about Mail.app. Now that I finally have fetchmail, procmail, and SpamBouncer set up and running (finally had some free time), I finally found a great use for some of the "expert" features of Mail.app. On the other hand, Pine still has it's place when I'm away...

    Fink 0.4.0 is out!

Make sure that you run fink selfupdate-cvs every once in a while. This adds new packages, and tells Fink of package updates. The number one complaint I've heard about Fink is that the location of the files that need to be downloaded move. Package maintainers are usually very quick about fixing...

    Your Home Page

I used to have www.excite.com, but I usually use Google, which has a built-in homepage of omniweb:/StartPage/. I either don't see it because I'm opening up something from SlashDock, or I want to search for something, and OmniWeb's built-in homepage has links to a bunch of different search engines.

    Chimera 0.2.1

Why not just set the font size in terms of percentages? PC browsers are generally set to be at a font size legible for them, and the same with Mac browsers. If I want something to be big text, I set it to be 125%. For small, I set it to 80%. Then if someone has changed their font to a larger one...

    What crashes your X?

I've had a kernel panic before, from unplugging my Spressa USB CD burner after attempting to see if it would work in OS X (no). Other than that, nothing. Basically, the only reason my computer ever turns off is because of thunderstorms. They are my nemesis.

How to print from mac os x across win98 pc network

Samba is used so that non-Windows computers can both connect to Windows machines and access their shared printers, and also so that Windows users can connect to non-Windows computers (and their printers, I think). So since Samba runs in MacOS X, it is feasible that we could get this to work...

    Herve's Bar & Grill

Check out the Google Search for Bruce Adcock. I'm results #1,2,3,4,5,9,16,19... (I stopped counting after that.) Actually, it's pretty scary, because you can get my ICQ number just by doing a Google search. Anyone else get something results like this with Google?

How to print from mac os x across win98 pc network

I have set this up, but have been unable to get it to work. I think the main reason is because Windows XP can share a postscript printer as a Unix postscript printer, whereas that is not the case for Windows ME and down. I should think, if one had Samba installed, that we could get something...

    Opening pc cad files

Rereading your post, I realize I'm an idiot. I don't know anything about VectorWorks, so I'm sorry to say that I can't help you.

    Opening pc cad files

My fiancee is going for a masters in architecture, so we have the same problem when she needs to look at her AutoCAD files on my computer. My solution was to have the files exported as DXF, and then open them in QCAD, which I installed through Fink. This is probably not the optimal solution...

What is still missing in OS X?

I second printer sharing (with and for Windows computers, too). and an SMB network browser in the Finder. I live in a mixed OS household, and while these things are manageable, it could be so much better.

    Nedit on 10.1.3?

Glad you got it to work. Nedit is, as you have surely noticed, a great program.

    Funny Graduate School Experiences

I finally got the joke, RacerX! They're teaching Fourier series to a Math 101 class. Oh that, and the whole Jar Jar thing. (Edited to protect the innocent. And I misspelled something.)

    Nedit on 10.1.3?

How did you install NEdit? I have version 5.2.2 installed through Fink, and have had no problems running it with the latest version of OroborOSX and xvnc. I do seem to remember having this problem myself, but upgrading to a newer version has definitely solved it.

OmniWeb equiv of IE's "Web Archive" feature?

OmniWeb used to have this feature, and it would save everything in a bundle called webpage.htmld. I was looking for this feature yesterday so I can write an AppleScript that pulls all the comics, national and local news, and weather together for me every morning and combines it all onto one...

OS X Security Update (April 2002)

Good call, simX. I'm installing it now-I'm all for security updates that don't require rebooting. Anyone else try it? And in the time it took me to write this message, it downloaded and installed. I guess I'll find out for myself if everything works fine.

    Palm Desktop 4.0 final released!

Don't hold your breath. The last I checked, the Palm OS is not upgradable on any Handspring. They did put out a patch to deal with the faulty RAM installed in my Visor Deluxe, put that's the best I've seen.

    OS 10.1.3- Fink- Gnome????

Installing bundle-gnome is a perfectly fine thing to do. Heck, that's how I installed it.

    OS 10.1.3- Fink- Gnome????

To use Gnome, add the line (at the end of .xinitrc file): exec /path/to/sw/bin/gnome-session where "/path/to/sw/bin/gnome-session" is probably just "/sw/bin/gnome-session". I don't know if there are any other ways to do this, but you can set Gnome through the settings panel to open up your...
