The Cube that shut down by itself...

The Cube has a proximity sensor for a power button... so there are any of a number of reasons why it might shut down by itself. For instance, kitty cat sees nice warm computer and sits on top, off goes computer. Set anythign else on top of it, you'll have the same problem. It's possible it's...

    DVDs on OSX

DVDs do not currently work, not even under classic. For now you will need to boot to OS 9 to use them.

    Install to a partition??

That's actually the best way to do it, as long as your second partition is at least a gig. That way if you want to get rid of OS X you don't have to erase your whole HD. Some of the Developer previews didn't support ONE partition installs, but it's always supported two. Personally, the last...

    Thoughts on OS-X/UNIX/and MacOS

Okay, allow me to put this another way then... if they had a GUI interface for all of the powerful server products already included in OS X (such as apache), then they wouldn't have any means to sell OS X SERVER. Why buy a $500 server product when you can get a $100 workstation product that is...

    iomega zip & macosx

Then maybe it's just the USB zip drives that work, due to the inclusion of USB mass storage support that they started including with OS 9. I'm tempted to install X Beta on my G4 at work to see if the zip drive on that works (internal, standard configuration), but I don't have it in 2...

    MacOS X Screen Saver?!

Yeah, that's the same package I found on versiontracker. Works well.

Things Apple forgot in OS X

do you have any idea how many duplicate feedback reports apple gets? Sure, they're all valid... but they're also identical. what I think would be a lot more cost-effective all around would be getting $20 off or so from the final release if you purchased a copy of the beta. That won't be too...

One of My Rants about Mac OS X

Consider posting this to Apple's feedback site (there's a nice little Mac OS X Feedback button in your dock unless you moved it). That's the way to get your voice heard. Also, keep in mind, this is BETA. A lot of that stuff is probably things they are working on and just havent found a way to...

    color ls in terminal?

That's because color in ls is a linux invention, and it's something that BSD doesn't support without additional installation. it does the color ls just fine when I telnet into my linux box. (Unfortunately it doesn't show the colors in vim but that's probably because I have something configured...

    IP Multihoming / DNS(named) ?

Actually, sendmail is included in the beta. I'm sure it could be configured to run as an SMTP server since it's still sendmail. I haven't tried it yet, but then I can't stand setting up sendmail to begin with... which is precisely why I shelled out the $99 for sendmail pro on my linux server...

Switching between OS 9 and X

The system disk utility is also installed in a "Mac OS 9" folder on your OS X partition. if you installed it on the same partition (not a good idea btw) then it's still in the Mac OS 9 folder along with the rest of the stuff that was on your hard drive before you installed X. The Startup...

    Thoughts on OS-X/UNIX/and MacOS

I don't know of any plans currently to have an OS 9.5. I do know that OS 9 does still work for people not ready for X yet. I also know that for long-time mac users, this is going to be a hard switch to make... but they still don't need to learn the command line. Anything they would want to do...

    PPP doesnt work ?

I noticed there is something on Version Tracker that should let you connect classic apps through your PPP connection. No idea if it works since I'm on DSL and ethernet connections work just fine in the classic environment.

    Airport?

Apple is working on getting AirPort to work... they wouldn't leave out one of their most popular new products on purpose! But remember that this is still beta software... there's a lot of things that don't work yet.

    Graphite Mode?

Personally I think the graphite mode is fine how it is. i definitely prefer it over aqua, and since the colors don't show up until you mouse over them anyway, you're not losing much since the icons still show up when you mouse over. The x - + tells me a lot more than the color does anyway.

    MacOS X Screen Saver?!

I actually found a package of 7-8 OS X compatable screen savers when I was browsing Versiontracker tonight... take a look there.

    Audio in OS X

i'm actually getting some strange audio behavior under my iMac under X... External speakers, I hear the startup chime no problem and then once X loads I have no sound at all. Unplug the externals, internal speakers work fine. Headphone jack works fine. Now for the really odd one... plug the...

    iomega zip & macosx

My USB zip 100 mounts no problem, just like a CD. don't know if SCSI or firewire zips will work just as well, but I don't see why they shouldn't (except I don't know that the firewire ones are made by iomega and therefore may need different drivers). My guess would be that an internal zip will...

    Suggestion for the site

Maybe there should be a command line FAQ forum. I've worked both with *nix and Macs for quite a while so the extra commands don't bother me... and honestly you don't NEED to access the command line to use OS X. But if it's something you want to learn, then some of those commands will be good...

    macosx.com Mail Accounts

Either 1 or 2 makes the most sense. no reason to start cluttering up the process by letting someone have one name for the forum and another for email.
