The fsck -y command solved all my problems. My new iMac works like a charm again, it's faster and it will shutdown properly. Great to have been in unix for the first time in my life. I will stick to the OSX GUI however!

guess you have had to install illustrator in applications on your osx drive. since i haven't done that, it's giving me the same ridiculous message. let's bet (or intelligently guess) on how long it will take them to fix this problem

in the Apple Knowledge base. Article 58527 mentions that there are occasions of this problem with slot-loading iMacs. I've contacted Apple and my service provider and they will fix it for free tomorrow! Great service:)
