    buffer underrun

Unless you have a drive with buffer under-run protection, don't burn in the background and devote your computer to just the burn process. I would not have an internet app running at the time either. Allocating more memory in OS9 will help but not eliminate the problem. To be the most...

Question: Applications folder with multiple partitions

Leave the original default application folder there, do the install and then move/delete the application. Most all apps that I have used still work fine somewhere else.

    Aqua & UI speed theories

All of these complaints about the live resizing in OS X. Yes, the resizing of a window in OS X does not keep up with the cursor. But, the window(s) being updated do not blink or redraw incessantly like in win2k or xp. It is smooth all the way in X, albeit slower. Also in win2k or XP when...

    preferences gone! please help

Apple's installer from OS X 10.0 prior to I think .4 had some problems with permissions. I had a program that virtually wiped out everything because of this bug. The developer thought I was crazy until I showed him how to reproduce the problem and subsequently wipe out his system too. This may...

Please help me!!! DHCP / OS X 10.1 problem

Do just as buubajim noted above. I just switched from DSL to cable when I moved this past week. On DSL, I had a hard-wired IP address, with cable it is DHCP. I had trouble with it after waking up and sometimes connecting the first time after a boot. I then found that the active network ports in...

LCD iMacs (and more) apparently confirmed!?

And to think I paid $2500 for that original 128k Mac, now I am really pissed. How dare Apple make a faster and better computer for less money, I am appalled.

    iPod abuse

Yes, same thing happened to me. Press and hold for ten seconds the menu and play buttons simultaneously. The case is from OWC Other World Computing which I now have and it is OK. Looks like they hurried putting it together.

    Mac OS X Speed

Drives with fans, hmmm! I have not seen any of those yet. I just ordered 6 Fujitsu 36gb SCSI Ultra 160 15000rpm drives for a new RAID 5 box I am putting on the NT 2k servers here at work. I wonder how hot those babies will be compared to the 7200rpm drives in our older raid box. In fact, I am...

    Mac OS X Speed

I cannot imagine that the difference in heat disappation is that much greater with a 7200rpm drive when compared to a 5400rpm model. I would think a greater affect of temperature is induced by the ambient room temperature changes. During the summer, when it was 90 degrees in the room, my iMac...

new firewire hd won't transfer files - any ideas to help?

Well, didn't know it was new. Certainly don't want to void a warranty. That would be my option now, to exercise the warranty :o I don't know about using a command line method to format drives in Terminal. I try to keep a PC at arm's distance, but have too many to babysit all day long. No PC...

new firewire hd won't transfer files - any ideas to help?

Don't take this wrong! If you have access to a PC and can remove the drive from the FireWire enclosure, try and reformat it there. I have had success doing that, then place it back in the Mac and try to reformat it again. I am assuming it is an EIDE drive. Something is wrong with the drive and...

    No Joke !!!!!!!!

The iMac is a really bad ham radio operator's friend. I know, as I am ham (literally too) but it splatters RF radiation all over the place. Most of it comes from the video and horizontal refresh circuitry in the monitor components in the iMac. My cube is virtually silent, as it does not have...

    Mac OS X Speed

More RAM and a upgrade to the hard drive will help when launching apps. The drives in the older iMacs were small and slow compared to what you get today. Make sure you run in thousands of colors too, instead of the default which is set to millions.

    Me Again!!

I bought my son an iBook 500 and I ran X 10.0.2 or something and it was OK with 192mb or RAM. OS X should have 512mb to eliminate most paging with an average user and with Classic running too. 128mb isn't going to cut it. BTW, as I understand it, this bug that XP suffers from is also in ME...

Terminal - How long does it take you to load?

Loads consistently with 3 bounces on both cubes and 8 on my iMac. Subsequent launches on the iMac took 5 and 2-3 on the cubes.

Internet File Sharing on Mac OS X

My first try would be Connect to Server and use the IP address. It will be tougher if you are going through any firewall or Router, but it should be possible, as I did it before in OS 9.

    iPod Software Updater 1.0.3 Released

Where is the updater at? They just released 1.0.2 and that is all I see at the site. err... nevermind, it is at versiontracker. I only have 450 songs and it doesn't seem any different to me. Seems to crank my larger headphones louder, but that is probably just the holiday cheer at work...

    10.1.2 Released

Downloaded, installed, optimized in 25 minutes with nary a hitch! When I updated my iMac it showed a MacOS X Update Combined at 35.2mb and 30 on the cube. Before I ran the update, I restarted and did an fsck -y and fixed a few problems. Sure beats a Windows Update with confusing html pages...
