    10.1.1

OS X is a completely different beast than OS9. Prebinding is done to ensure the OS knows the location of the various files used for an app or the OS itself. The information is then cached so the files are bound together for quicker loading. The biggest reason it is done is to increase...

    10.1.1

What is the big deal with waiting while the optimization runs in the background as you continue working (or playing ) on your Mac?

    10.1.1. messed up everythin!!!!!

I would start-up in single user mode and run fsck -y at the command prompt. I also had to rebuild my classic desktop to get classic working for me correctly.

    10.1.1. messed up everythin!!!!!

Try using the option key at boot to select your startup if your Mac has open firmware. At least you can boot into 9 if you can do the above.

where is log that logs app crashes?

Console will log crashes. You must open console, go to prefs, click on the crashes tab. The log file should then be found in ~/Library/Logs

G5 - When will we see it and how will it be?

If you look at some recent benchmarking, the 700mhz iMac did as well or better then the low-end 733 G4 see this example Disk, bus, altivec and video processor improvements is the only thing that brought the G4 ahead of the G3. Every computer can benefit from the above.

    what does this mean?

I have not found out for myself what the error means, but I see it on all my os x installs during startup.

G5 - When will we see it and how will it be?

dev-dude, I said that it was NOT non-existent as stated by an earlier poster. See macosrumors.com for more dirt on the latest G5, including a statement that rev .8 of the G5 has par Altivec performance with G4s at the same clock speed. Altivec is there, and will be in a big way in the future Gx...

G5 - When will we see it and how will it be?

Altivec is not non-existent in the G5, it is just not up to the performance they have achieved in the current line of G4s. The G5 will be a significant improvement over the G4 and it will scale well in Ghz. Bus speed as noted here in earlier posts, is probably going to be the most important...

The two worst things in OS X EVER

Security is the reason we have all of our Linux and NT servers in a LOCKED room. I guess one could still break in with a sledge hammer or blow the doors off. Open Firmware password protection is the best option to protect from booting from a CD or boot into OS 9.

    sneaky peek password

thanks frgee, i just found the link as you posted. However, I launched sp10, clicked on my macintouch.com bookmark and it crashed. I launched it again, it did not crash, but it does load some pages faster and it crashed sooner.

    sneaky peek password

What is the URL for the sneakypeek? I have v7 and it crashed way too often. v7 corrupted my bookmarks some how and I lost the link. Never mind I found it doing a search of the forums.

    mounting shared folders on Win2000

It does work with an NT domain, both NT4 and 2000 server. I use it everyday at work. The NT servers won't see the OS X shares though. I don't think that windows personal file sharing uses SMB, plus there is no authentication. If you ever had Dave from Thursby installed, you must uninstall it...

What is your main HOME OS

I run X on the cube, 9.2.1 on the imac and 8.6 on a 5300 PowerBook. Sheepguy42, with all the RAM you have, placing your swap on a separate partition would probably yield you no increase in performance.

Why is OSX picky on RAM?

testuser is correct in that RAM can test good but still fail when in use. A chip that fails intermittently is the toughest thing to troubleshoot. Like he said, "I can't state it more plainly". Take some advice from those who have had more experience. There could also be a thermal problem in...

Why is OSX picky on RAM?

I admin about 30 macs in a software publishing company, and most run OS 9.2 using Quark. There had been two "flaky" G4s that caused corruption in Quark files, once or twice a week. I reinstalled the OS, checked fonts, and all the usual stuff one would do to fix a Mac. Still no luck! Then I...

Do you have any say in what OS you use at work?

Fortunately I am the sys admin of a software publishing company, so I get the best stuff and it ain't no Dell will BillyBoy's OS on it.

    MAC OX S For Intel?

I cannot believe that Apple would concurrently develop an OS X build for Intel processors. They have too much to do making it function the way we macheads want on their own (Apple) hardware. Add the myriad of combinations of hardware one could assemble with an Intel mobo and you have a real...
