Classic and OS X performance (Calm down, not what you think ;)

Some Classic apps will consume close to 100% CPU when running as their main event loops are call GetNextEvent too frequently. This is how an app can take over your CPU when it is poorly programmed. However, when another X app needs CPU time, it will preempt the classic app and get the attention...

    Try this

I just launched all the apps on my dock, about 20 of them and I had no problems. I did this twice and for the first time with 576mb of RAM, I had pageouts shown in Top and only 7mb of free RAM. No kernel panics in X since March 24th when Quickeys in Classic caused a kernel panic.

    10.1 Speed Not Acceptable

I cannot understand how OS X can be so slow for some people. I find with 10.1 that I can even use OS X on a Wallstreet 266 PowerBook. Those who say it is like molasses must be in some kind of time-warped space continuum or something is really wrong with their install. I have installed it on...

version of Darwin in OS X

Ok, thanks for responding. I was concerned when I saw that 1.4.1 was included in X.1 and I had 1.4.

    The NEW Longest uptime....

The original post started out as the uptime without rebooting. In terminal, type uptime and that is what they are reporting here. Basically, how long it has been since you rebooted your OS.

    The NEW Longest uptime....

I had a B/W G3 running OS X 10.0.4 which had an uptime of over a month. But it was only used 2 or 3 times a week testing classic compatibility of software we develop. It was running on a 500w UPS. Anyone that used it never rebooted it, they just let it run and go into sleep mode. What...

version of Darwin in OS X

I have read on the web that the version of Darwin included in OS X 10.1 is 1.4.1 When I type uname -r in a terminal window it returns 1.4 and not 1.4.1 Can anyone else see 1.4.1 returned in terminal in OS X.1 ?

    DAVE and OS X 10.1

I had Dave installed on two Macs with 10.0.4 (both Cubes) and it worked well after the second release. SMB will not work with Dave installed in 10.1 I had to download the installer to properly un-install it. Manually removing the Dave components did not work (guess I missed something) After...

    Loss of volume in 10.1

I have found that after running 10.1 and iTunes and many ( up to 20 ) other programs, that at some point, the max volume drops by a very noticeable amount. Someone else had posted about a lack of bass in 10.1, after running for a certain amount of time. I have not figured out any correlation...

    unwanted user at login

I have the same problem with PostGres which is running as a service and shows as a user. I cannot log in with this account, as I don't what the password is and there is no user directory for it either. Another one for 10.1.x hopefully soon.

Is iDisk slow as molasses for everyone else too?

yes, I too think it is slow, unresponsive and it causes the Finder/Desktop to be locked out when accessing it. I do like that it doesn't time out anymore.

10.1 release slower then 5g27 on my dual

I could not get PC networking to work at first and you won't see them listed in the Connect to Server window. You can use smb://computer_name/share_name and connect. I have done this with Windows NT4 and 2000. However, it did not work until I uninstalled Dave 3a (thursby.com). So if you...

    Thanks Apple

I was reluctant to open this thread thinking it was more whining about getting the upgrade or paying $20 for. OS X is great! It is fast and stable. I don't know what hardware or why zippygaloo complains about the speed. Bogs down your day, get real? I would much rather use OS 10.1 o my 450...

    10.1 GM Problems????

That does not work for me. I was able to connect in terminal using a smbutil command, but then I could not see the drive through the Desktop. So Samba is there, just not implemented fully. I am trying to connect to a NT 4 SP5 server with cleartext password authentication. I also have Dave...

WHEN will we be LIBERATED from OS 9???

Well, DVD works for me on my iMac & cube. I have read that it doesn't work with hardware DVD decoding or something like on a B/W G3. As far as SCSI, what do you mean by that? I don't have scsi except on my Wallstreet PB which I will try to install 10.1. Are you saying 10.1 doesn't support...

WHEN will we be LIBERATED from OS 9???

You certainly are distressed about OS 9 and OS X. Try NetFinder for ftp on OS X, it works very well for me. MacAvenger (found in this forum) has an Office beta posted, or did as of last night. OS 9.1 has been very stable on my iMac, but as we know a single extension conflict or bad program can...

    This is pissin' me off

The Finder should recognize a CD-R when it is inserted into your recorder. It will ask if you want to prepare to burn it. I could not find the app either. It is integrated into the Finder and not a separate app. Toast 5 is faster, but of course it is not free. I burned a 600mb CD in 5 minutes...

    Macavenger... your FTP

Don't mount the image, immediately burn the image using Toast 5. I only got it to work when I did not mount the image.
