DSL, OS X, and PC network problem

First, let me apologize for the length of this post, but it covers everything I could think would be needed for background info. Many thanks for anyone who can help walk me through this. I would also like to preface that I am trying to avoid spending money on any new hardware (hubs, routers) or...

[HOWTO] - Speed up DNS lookups in OSX

Darkshadow - It seems that the typos were the problem, although I also found there may be one in the dig command. When I run dig I get: C.ROOT-SERVERS.NET. ...[et al] 'SERVERS' is plural. I also found that it didn't work unless I typed the part shown above in capitals. I didn't think that...

[HOWTO] - Speed up DNS lookups in OSX

Darkshadow, Try as I might, I can't get past the "nslookup" stage. It always returns: [localhost:/var/named/pz] root# nslookup Default Server: localhost Address: 0.0.0.0 I also wonder if you have a typo in the directions. At the stage where it says: Should the second line read...

    Wolfenstein

Two questions: 1. How do I make sure that my firewall is not blocking port 27900 - 27999, and if it is, how do I fix that? 2. I'm not familiar with r_smp 0. Is that a terminal command or something in a config file?

    How do you monitor users?

I believe that you can also use the finger and who commands in the terminal. type in "man finger" or "man who" (without the quotes) to get some info on syntax. I don't know what this will do for multiple users exactly, because I'm not personally connected to a network and can't test it (also...

Mouse under Mac OS X 10.1

Yep, I'm using 10.1. The file is hidden so you will need an application that can either enable invisible files to "unhide" or an editor that can access hidden files. I use TinkerTool 2 to enable access to hidden files. Then I just open it in TextEdit You can find TinkerTool on Version...

Mea culpa! Sorry about that. Darkstranger..., Darkshadow..., what's the dif?;) At least I gave the credit to someone. I did see that you had posted your tip after I had added it here. Didn't mean to double post. It's a great tip, though. Now I just need to be able to use the 3rd and 4th...

For security, OS X can't index volumes or servers that you don't have permission to. By default it should index your user folder, but it won't for any other users on your system. If you are the administator you should be able to index your volume. You may need to enable the root user through...

    Software RAID?

Yes, software RAID is supported in OS X 10.1. You have the option to set up a striped or mirrored RAID. I don't think that it is available when booted in OS 9, so until there is confirmation that you can mount volumes set up in RAID it might be wise to wait.
