    Mac to use Intel Chips!

I expect that there will be reinstall media. I also expect that it will only work with the exact Intel chipset and integrated video on board. They probably don't even have a generic "VGA" driver like Windows does. That'll keep it from working on too much beige-box PC hardware. I also...

    Mac to use Intel Chips!

Yeah, hopefully I'm not limited in speaking too much by the license agreement. I think screenshots are out, but we'll see when it actually gets here. I read it when I ordered it, but blah blah legal blah blah. :)

    Slow DNS response on Wireless

My apologies if this has been covered already, but my search-fu is weak and I didn't really see it answered in another thread. Since upgrading to Tiger, my networking at home has been almost unusual. I finally traced it down to DNS lookups. Just about every-other DNS lookup will timeout. As...

There is only ONE Reason to buy a Macintosh

You can order some Dells today without an OS installed, and they have several models that are "preinstalled with Linux." They don't really save anything off the price, though, and they tend to be hidden away on the site in the small business side of the things. I've got a PowerEdge 400SC here...

    Totally missed by EVERYONE!

Hmmm, I don't know about that. There are lots of x86 chips out there in embedded land. The AMD Elan chip that's 486 based is extremely popular. The IIS uses 386 based embedded chips to control most of the spacecraft systems. PC/104 stacks are hugely popular and are x86 based.

    Totally missed by EVERYONE!

I fully expect that actual device from that Apple Tablet patent we've all seen will be sporting a low power Intel chip...

Please don't call it a Macintosh

I know one of the Apple exec said they wouldn't stop people from running Windows on Intel based Macs, but I'd like to know technically how that is going to be possible. We're assuming, probably correctly, that most of the core Macintosh architecture is not changing. That means OpenBoot...

    Mac to use Intel Chips!

Most of the time each family of new x86 chips requires a BIOS change to work, anyway, even if they are socket-compatible. So you will likely be able to replace the chip within a very small model range, but not as much as you'd like... Complete conjecture based on the work required by PC...

There is only ONE Reason to buy a Macintosh

I'd like to think Mac users aren't as shallow as that. But maybe not, maybe it really was an elitist thing all these years after all...

    PC & MAC become one

If Microsoft doesn't move VirtualPC to be a better product, there is a reasonable chance that VMWare might move theirs. Seeing as how they already support Linux as a host OS for their software, they've already taken the hardest step in porting. Getting it to run on a x86 based Mac OS X would...

    PowerPC is dead. PowerMacs? PowerBooks?

Wonder if they'll stick the Intel Inside logo on the boxes...

Why did you buy your Mac ?

Hmm, you need more choices. :) I bought mine because I'm a developer & geek and I like to keep up with whats going on. Until OS X didn't feel the Mac was worth any of my time, quite honestly.

    Mac to use Intel Chips!

I'd say not having a good performer on the laptop range is a good enough reason alone. I'm quite irritated at my pbook's performance... But, this is a quote from Jobs' interview with CNBC after the keynote. It might be all just spin, but it does sound like they just didn't see a future with...

Where can I find the Developer's Kit for Intel?? Anybody seen it?

http://developer.apple.com/transitionkit.html I ordered one a little while ago. You have to send the hardware back to them by December 31st, 2006.

    Mac to use Intel Chips!

64-bit Pentium 4s have been shipping for a little while now. the 6xx series Pentium 4s have the 64-bit instruction set capabilities. If Steve was demoing on a 3.6GHz P4, then that was like the 660 since that's the 3.6GHz 64-bit capable chip. Of course, we know OS X already works with both a...

    No Next-Gen PowerBooks Until 2007?

There's no way I can stick with the performance of this 1.67GHz G4 PowerBook for a whole year. I'll probably have to switch back to a Wintel laptop until one is available if that's going to be the case. :(

    Mac to use Intel Chips!

Yep... I had planned on ordering whatever new PowerMacs were going to come out this week. Now, I won't bother with any new hardware until the transition is over. Well, maybe the dev kit :)

Does Memory Management Suck or What?

I think you just have a misunderstanding of the implementation on your Linux system, then. The memory manager there has an active and inactive page cache, just like the Darwin kernel OS X is using. Don't assume that just because you see "227996k free" on a user mode app like top that everything...
