I often place a space before the name of programs I use a lot, so they are at the top of the list. The installer was not able to recognize this and so was complaining that I had no copy of Safari on my machine. Removing the space did the trick

But I can't get that far. At the point where I indicate which disk I want to use, all of them show up as unusable

When I try to install Safari I get a message that says none of my disks meet the requirements. I am running 10.4.9 and I certainly have enough space. Any ideas what might be wrong? Thanks

Right: I plugged each of them into a second computer , and nothing showed up. I am sure you are right that the problem is with the drives, but what would cause both the fail simultaneously?

The only recent update was for Java Plugging into another machine does not help: I am baffled as to what could have caused *both* drives to malfunction at the same time
