wild_horse: if you can figure out how to install linux then I would think you would know that osx is for mac hardware only.. come on now.

in 96 I switched to mac and my first was a used powerbook 540c that had been upgraded to a ppc 603e 117mhz. it had the ram maxed to 40mb and had a 500mb hd. it also came with an external cd rom, external zip and external 56k modem. it was a pretty sweet setup for the time.

I prefer themechanger. shapeshifter works with many more themes though.

I love ucontrol and have used it for months now even though I have a trackball with scroll. great tool to have.

i'm a semi-pro mac user and see no need to move to tiger. I use quicksilver and it does so much more than spotlight can. tiger also crawls compared to panther performance wise. to be totally honest many of the tiger features seem to be fluff. just my opinion..

running osx on 256 mb ram is a bad idea. 512 min. 1GB is even nicer. my G4 500 runs panther great on 1GB.

I use a 4 button mouse on osx and wish there were even more buttons.

cowboylin: try this.. open disk util. select the drive and click the erase tab. click options and select "zero all data" it will take a while but it may be worth it.

first sentence of his post: "i recently bought a powerbook g4, the newest model with the 1.67ghz processor etc.." anyway.. sounds like it is damaged and worst case scenario is 150-200 for a new hd. apple won't cover user error in most situations.

thats amazing. good thinking on your part to get that going. I think you should tell apple this story. I bet they would be interested to listen if nothing else.
