The avi file itself is probably corrupt if VLC, mplayer, wmp won't play it. As powermac said try to convert it. It's your only hope!

I have an IBM drive. It has two usb cables. One for data transfer and power if usb2. And another for power if it is a usb1.1 bus. My pb has usb2 so it should work with just the one cable, but it doesn't. I am inclined to agree that the usb buses are underpowered in a mac.

(if you are using automatic location) I connect to a number of networks and always have to set the location manually. Automatic just doesn't work! (and causes the symptom you describe,) Try manually setting a location and use that location.
