OS X + Fink causes a freeze on bootup

Two possible locations - /Library/StartupItems or (less likely) /System/Library/StartupItems. If that doesn't help, I'm afraid all I can suggest is reinstalling OS X. :(

OS X + Fink causes a freeze on bootup

I suggest booting up in single-user mode (Cmd-s) to get into the command line interface, then mounting your system at the prompt (I think the command is "mount -uw /" but it's listed right there anyway). Then just delete the entire /sw directory and start again. And if you have fink as a...

I can't take it anymore ... What is this for?

Services can potentially be used by Carbon apps, but the apps have to be rewritten to access them. And I have heard that Apple needs to tweak the API to make that easier to do before we see Service-using Carbon apps.

OS X + Fink causes a freeze on bootup

Which version of OS X is on the iBook? Which version of Fink did you install? Did you install it in /sw as recommended? With more info, maybe we can figure out what you should try next.

Where do you get your (mis)information? 10.2.2 is not yet released, although there are some developer seeds out there. I'm running 10.2.1, which has a different kernal from 10.1.x, which had a different kernel from 10.0.x. I've run both Win2k and WinXP on VPC, with all the Windoze updates...

    X.2 UI/features...

I gotta try that with YoupiKey! :D It works! Functions when another app is active, launches iTunes in the background. Sweeet.

I can't take it anymore ... What is this for?

Services is one of the things I like about OmniWeb. If I find a news story that has some interesting comment buried deep inside it, I can highlight the interesting comment and go to Services > Mail > Send Selection and it opens a new Mail window with that text right in the body of the email...

More like comparing WinXP to Mac OS X 10.1.x, rather than Jaguar. XP is basically Win2k with eye candy. They run on the same kernel, after all. Well, I guess I shouldn't have expected you to know anything about Macs.

    CD burning

I used to get frequent error codes while trying to burn data CDs. What works for me is to use Disk Copy to create a disk image of the data I want to burn, and then tell DC to burn the new image.

    I have windows 3.1!!

We used Windoze 3.1 on our PCs at work until 1999, when they bought new Dells because of the Y2K scare. Win3.1 ran just fine (for playing Minesweeper and Klondike). :p

    The Daily Joke thread!

(Also PG-13) Two cowboys from Texas walk in to a roadhouse to wash the trail dust from their throats. They stand at the bar, drinking beer and talking about current cattle prices. Suddenly, a woman at a nearby table, who is eating a sandwich, begins to cough. After a minute or so, it becomes...

    Adding an Avatar to Profile

Go to your user cp > Edit Options. Scroll down to almost the bottom of the page and you'll find the avatar setting. Click on Change Avatar, then either list its url if you want to use one that's on line, or use the Browse button to select one that's on your hard drive.

Gee, I wonder why Apple didn't mention that in their Jaguar ads. ;)

    OS X.2 on SE?

Try here. Let me know how Jaguar runs on it. :D

    Damn what happened here???

It's kind of cool-looking at first, but I don't know if I could "live" in it, so to speak. That sound effect in the menu kinda freaked me. Thought it was my hard drive! :p

    .mac

Count me as another former iTools/.mac user. I'm another one who rarely used iDisk or the free webspace. $100/year for email? I don't think so! There are a couple of free webspace services out there, and if I feel the need for iDisk-like functionality, I can set up an ftp server in 10...

    Toast 5.2 Officially Released (again)

Umm, it doesn't necessarily need a "legitimate" serial (nudge, nudge, wink, wink). :p

    uninstalling Fink?

In the Terminal, type: pico .cshrc That will bring you to a screen that (probably) will have only one line: source /sw/bin/init.csh "Comment out" this line by putting the # character at the start of it. That makes the system ignore the line. Type control-o to "write out" the change, and...

which disk utility is best for OSX?

"Features" like giving bogus error messages and destroying drives with Disk Doctor? :p Seriously, NU 7 is a real POS. Drive 10 has come a long way. Version 1.1.2 is very good. But I voted for DiskWarrior, primarily because PlusOptimizer (included on the CD) is the safest defragmenting...
