    A workaround that I've heard others mention but have not tried myself: In the network pref panel -> modem -> PPP -> PPP Options, try turning off "send PPP echo packets" and see if the problem clears up.

    Can't get Classic to load in OSX

    Your MacOS 9 System Folder is 9.1, not 9.0.x, right? If you open the Startup Disk preference panel, can you select your OS 9.1 system folder and reboot back into 9.1 natively okay?

    Mail app won't read mail

    You should't need to do anything special to make it work with IMAP. It sounds like it's at least connected to the server and gotten the info about what mailboxes you have and how many unread messages they have in them... You might try opening the Activity Viewer (it's under Mail's "Window" menu)...
