Thanks again guys. Already had the back off and all the caps seem ok, no obvious bulging etc. My machine has the start next to the SMU reset. Will leave both machines overnight and do a swap-over in the morning when cold.

Could be a system problem of sorts. Is it possible to boot from a CD or external drive and try to access the faulty drive?

Further info: System - 10.4.11 installed. New hard-drive was cloned from old drive, all permissions repaired etc. Could this be a software problem?
