Help with transferring iTunes & iPhoto

Simply copy them over into the correct place -- you can do this with CDs, DVDs, flash drives, external hard drives, wired networking, wireless networking, or any number of other transfer mediums.

    Backup iTunes for iPhone

Here's an article about what, specifically, needs to be backed up and transferred to the new computer (or the old computer with a fresh OS X install): http://osxdaily.com/2012/02/29/sync-iphone-new-computer-without-losing-data/ I cannot vouch for the effectiveness of this tutorial, as the last...

assigning different network connections to specific apps

If you know the web address/server that Spotify is using, you might be able to use the "routes" table to force outbound traffic to that web address on a specific interface: http://superuser.com/questions/181882/force-an-application-to-use-a-specific-network-interface...

Lion Finder sidebar links keep not working

When the links don't work, is it possible that the networked drive they reference has been unmounted? If so, are you expecting that when you click a link to a network location, AND that location has been unmounted from the machine, that OS X will automatically re-mount that network location?

Have you used any kind of "icon-changing" program, like CandyBar, to try and customize your icons in the past?

    MaC OS X Server VPN

Ah, maybe in the DNS pane (in the "Advanced" section of the Network System Preferences for your VPN connection) -- you can manually add your DNS server there (sorry, "gateway" was the wrong term).

    MaC OS X Server VPN

Do you have the proper gateway configured for TCP/IP for your VPN connection? Usually this would be the computer hosting DNS -- in a lot of my situations, this is the local IP address of the computer hosting the VPN services.

Are you going to buy the next-generation iPad 3?

Ah, yes... I do remember that. I'm not one to think that companies pull Bait and switch operations that often, but if ever there was one that was blatantly obvious, that one was it!

Wat? There was an unlimited plan for the iPad?

    ping

Playlists don't take up any space on your iPod (or, actually, negligible amounts of space) -- the music files themselves do. So, for example, you could have 100 songs on your iPod and two playlists, and that would take up the same amount of space as 100 songs with 1,000 playlists (of course...

    MacBook Pro Start Up Chime

When you reset the PRAM, how many startup chimes did you reset it through? It's recommended to hold down command-option-p-r until the computer reboots and you hear the startup chime [b]3 times[/]b. The PRAM does, indeed, store the computer's speaker volume -- can you try resetting the PRAM...

    How many files

No, because "--exclude" only works with files, not directories... but you can do something clever like exclude all files within that directory like so: tar czvf archive.tar.gz --exclude='images/*'

    MacBook Pro Start Up Chime

Instead of muting, can you try turning the volume all the way down instead? I understand that functionally, they should be the exact same -- but it's worth a shot. I remember on my old G4 that the startup chime's volume matched the system volume, but the chime was still present if I simply hit...

I suspect Time Machine won't work on NAS drive

What protocol are you using to connect (SMB, AFP, NFS, etc.)? Have you tried doing a "manual" connect (in other words, directly connecting via IP address instead of double-clicking the icon) by selecting "Go > Connect to server..." from the Finder? You can include a user login name doing this...

I suspect Time Machine won't work on NAS drive

What happens if, in the window that says "connection failed," you click the "connect as..." button on the right-hand side and enter valid credentials (username and password for the NAS)? Many times, OS X will try and connect as an unauthenticated user to network shares, and if the server or...

I suspect Time Machine won't work on NAS drive

No, but you're supposed to continue related discussions in the original thread you started -- not start numerous new threads. If someone doesn't know the answer in the first thread, starting a new thread won't magically make someone here know the answer -- it only serves to slightly annoy...

    ping

There is a button in the far lower right-hand corner of the iTunes window that hides and shows Ping. There is no way to absolutely remove Ping from iTunes, but simply hiding the Ping sidebar accomplishes the same thing.
