Digging this up as I just tested it with my unibody macbook and just plugging into the headphone port uses the mic on the headset - very cool! Also in the Sound prefs for input it comes up as 'external microphone'. I made sure it was using that not the one on the mac as blowing softly over it...

If the jack broken off in the port? Or is it just _acting_ like there is a jack in there? If the latter, check if there is a faint red light shining out of the port.

I guess it has moved on a lot since i last looked, to be honest I just ignored it since .mac arrived years back, that and a lot of the time i was a student without the cash to spend.

I never went for .mac/mobile me in the end as it was just so much too pricey for the service - maybe convenience justifies it, or the cool email address but i have a domain and decent, cheap hosting that sutoinstalls plenty of webapps like gallery, wordpress etc, i never understood the advantage...

From the look of it you have the mid2007 aluminium imac - OWC says you can have most any kind sata HD - even a 10k rpm one (though as i mentioned it is a smaller capacity). That said everymac point out it will invalidate your warranty and as fryke says taking those machines apart is no picnic...

As far as I know you _have_ to use a Leopard install DVD to get the drivers onto xp. Perhaps someone else at college can lend you one? You only need it for 10 mins or so.

To be honest its never a good idea to work without an install DVD - I would strongly advise you go buy a retail copy of Leopard from your local store - then you will have the drivers and the ability to fix your machine if it goes wrong.
