you can rip it to a movie file. Use a program called handbrake. I think quicktime works better with mp4, so stick with that when you rip it.

The icon bouncing tends to mean its looking for something it cant find, and eventually times out. Go delete the pref file and give it another shot.
A lot of ones will work in iDVD. Even if they are not mov's make a reference file and then they will go into iDVD - most of them anyway. iDVD has its on encoder.

Word of Warning - If you do clean install dont use the Unix filesystem option, go with HFS, some apps just dont work properly with it, most notably Keynote, Lotus Notes and OS 9.
