Probably because it does not get enough power from the keyboard usb port.

My parents use the very same machine with Leopard. Its ok. Usable except on flash sites.

"passthrough" export in QuickTime Pro works like a charm... a 720p HD mkv file is converted to Apple TV format in less than 15 mins on a MBP... :)
