I had the exact same problem/symptoms on a G5. The fan on the video card had croaked. New video card solved the problem.

i have two LaCIE external firewire drives and have been very happy with them.

Is anyone using a 4 port USB 2.0 PCI card that is simply plug and go? This is for a Power Mac G5 dual-core running 10.4.5. I don't want to install drivers as some boards require.
