Sorry..thanks for your help but as I mentioned above I deleted all the prefs related to printing, deleted the printer and reinstalled the printer using the current HP drivers. Maybe this calls for Diskwarrior or Techtool :( Argh..... I guess I will go through all the troubleshooting steps...
