    Migrating to mac

I have loaded XP on my iMac Dual Core. It works well. So that's my suggestioon too. Dual boot until you can afford to replace all your Windows apps.

    Migrating to mac

Perhaps you are familiar with the O'Reilly Press Missing Manual series? Well there happens to one especially for "switchers". I highly recommend it. That will step you through the "here's how you do it in Windows, and here's how you do it on a Mac." Also there is this at the main Apple site.

Helping 2 switchers - intel now or wait?

I would like to second that about the memory needed to accomodate Rosetta. With 1 gig of ram my iMac Dual Core runs all the Office apps quite well. Your dad has nothing to lose really. The only time I notice a lag is if I have two or more Office apps open at once. But then that was true on my G4...

Mac Book Pro Review at ARS

There's this review at ARS. Of interest is the fact that for one of the refernce machines they use a DEll laptop running Mac OS X 10.4.4. That right OS X 10.4.4. Better hurry before Apple legal finds out about it.:p

    My Apple Consumer rights

That particular hard drive technology is fairly new. As I understand it, there is a motion sensor in the latest laptops that senses when the unit is being dropped or otherwise moving in a manner which may be harmful. This sends a signal to the hard drive which parks the heads and shuts it down...

    What Changed You???

Wow! At least we know where you stand! Regarding the eMac, most of the PC user criticisms would apply to the iMac. :p How many PC owners ever actually do upgrades? Not many I'll guess. How do I know this? They usually don't know how to open the case.

    What Changed You???

Windows Millenium Edition basically did it for me. I purchased a Gateway that came with that POS operating system. The reboots every thirty minutes got tiresome. Then there was an HP laptop that just didn't like having a usb zip drive connected. Most important: My aged parents, who were 85 at...

    Front Row Judder

I have a 17 inch model with the standard 128k graphics. I have not experienced this behavior, nor have I heard about this from anyone else. I would say it's time to call Apple, or, if you live near a store, take it in.

    Epson Sharing Issue

Perhaps you could use the gimp print driver (now called guten print). The information is available here: http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/p_Supported_Printers.php3 You would install the driver, then when you add a printer, select add an IP printer. The IP address would be that of the mac...

Backing up files to external hard disc.

Open the Finder, then go to the Applications directory. Then look for the Utilities folder. Disk Utility will be in there. Select the external drive in the left hand side bar. Then click the Erase button. Go with the default choice for formatting which should be Mac HFS Extended (journaled)...

Backing up files to external hard disc.

If you control-click the drive as mounted on the desktop, then slect Get Info, the information box should open. About three-fourths of the way down should be something called Ownership and Permissions. If you open that, you should see a drop down list that probably indicates Read Only. It may be...

Looks like Intel iMacs are shipping.

Just some very preliminary reports. Provided one has 1 gig of memory, instead of just the base 512, then Rosetta doesn't affect performance much. Rosetta apparently has a large memory foot print. However, apps which run under Rosetta seem to get faster after the first run. I didn't time this...

Looks like Intel iMacs are shipping.

I have had my 17 inch since Thursday. I did the firewire transfer thing during setup from a G4 Powermac. Only one program didn't migrate properly. It's one I hadn't used recently, so no biggie. I did up the memory to 1 gig, and got the wireless keyboard and mouse. I ordered the day after the...

Why do ibook g3's still sell for over $350?

People can form some strange emotional attachments to objects. I have the last of the G4 Powermac series, which is a good computer for me. I was contemplating how I could justify buying a mactel, whenever they become avaialble. Tha was until someone told me that if I ever decided to sell that I...

    Firefox

Hmm. Maybe this is the place to mention this, maybe not. Firefox generally works well at this site unless you are a volunteer tech and try to check the Open Questions. Then it get's caught in a page refresh loop. At least that's what it does for me. I am going back to Safari as the default...

    Any New Software at MWSF

There's been lots of discusssion on these forums and others about new hardware, probably because of us all expecting the first Mactels. But what about the software side of things? I can't recall having seen much on that. Won't there have to be something to help entice possible switchers?

Why do ibook g3's still sell for over $350?

There is one factor that no one has mentioned yet. There are a lot of "die hards" who want the capability to boot into OS9. The G3 iBooks have that capability. So if one has a legacy app that doesn't run well in classic, then the G3 iBook would be the one to have. The same thing may happen...

Best wishes & luck to any New Orleans members...

Well that's good to hear. There are several professional people who came up here as evacuees who have started looking for houses. I don't know if my sister and her husband will stay there. Of course they will be returning; but staying, we'll see. People I know who live in Dade country...

Best wishes & luck to any New Orleans members...

Oh I think it's pretty obvious what the reasons might have been for the delay: If I had been in the president's position, I would have federalized the National Guard, declared martial law, and sent in the 82nd to take care of the "looters and shooters". Well this is what ultimately has...
