All Files now in 'Shared'

For some reason, all my files, including mail messages, preferences for safari, mail etc, as well as all documents are in the users>shared, rather than users>jonchatwin as they should be. Also, the icons for Music, Movies, Pictures etc are normal folder icons, rather than the specific ones.
I have no idea how this has happened, but I'm not able to simply copy all the library files back over as I have done with my documents.

Did you happen to try and rename your user account or home folder at any point?

What exactly changed with the system from the time it was behaving normally to the time you discovered this change? Any new hardware/software installations? Upgrades? System changes? Anything noteworthy?

Don't mess around. Back up all your critical data, save off your home folder - or wherever your Library / Preferences and Application Support folders are - and do a clean install of the system. You can really hose things badly if you keep operating your computer while it's exhibiting that kind of behavior.
