amsmailtool fails when upgrading from 10.1 to 10.3

I am trying to upgrade a 10.1 Apple Mail Server to OSX 10.3.8.
However when I get to the mail database conversion step using amsmailtool the conversion never occurs, I get a successful message instantly but nothing actually happens.
I will post more detail in a later thread, I just found this forum and wanted to see if anyone had any ideas, and I don't have the detail with me :)

Some detail that I can remember:
I installed OSX fresh on a G4, downloaded all updates and patches thru Mar 2005. Made a copy of the maildb from the 10.1 server and copied to the newly built 10.3.8 server.

Keep in mind I am following the migration document from apple support.
It says to save the 10.1 database to the /library/AppleMailServer directory.
This is not AppleMailServer directory on 10.3.8 !
You have to create this directory and then put the 10.1 DB in it.
Then run /usr/bin/cyrus/tools/amsmailtool
Initially I recieved and error that amsmailtool was unable to access the imap\user directory.
Which makes sense because it does not exist.
(Apple support says that the amsmailtool will create this directory) I ran Repair disk permissions but the only way to get this message to go away was to once again manaully create the \user directory. After that I no longer recieved the error however the success message comes back instantly but nothing is done.
The 10.1 DB is about 2GB in size.
I will get the exact error messages amsmailtool gave me and post them .
I called "Preimier" Apple Support and believe it or not the tech said " Hold on a minute" .... 10 min later he returns and says " I just tried amsmailtool on my machine and it works great" ARGGHHHHH

Hmmm....more detail please! :)

Do you have enough disk space to properly use the tool? You should have enough free space to more than equal your current mail database.

Have you looked through the help for the tool?

As root:

/usr/bin/cyrus/tools/amsamailtool -help

Yep a little more ,sorry about the detail I am at work now and don't have the exact error messages in front of me.
To answer your questions I did goto the help for amsmailtool that is how I figured out how to force it to look for a 10.1 db instead of searching for a 10.2 then 10.1.
I also used the command line params to change the location to see if that made a difference. And there is about 20 GB free on the HD

More detail on this issue.
The name of the 10.1 mail database is \library\applemailserver\macosxmaildb

When I run the amsmailtool command I get the following error:
reconstruct: couldn't open partition /var/spool/imap/user
When I check /var/spool/imap/user does not exist there is only
/var/spool/imap/stage.
Run Repair Permissions
if I create /var/spool/imap/user and run amsmailtool again
I get "user mail export done" almost instantly but nothing is actually done.
The 10.1 mail database is 2.1GB
I spent last night formating the drive and re-installing the OS loading all of the updates and patches and then immediately trying the db conversion, just to remove the possiblility of a conflicting app and to quelch apple support when the inevitably say that is what I need to do :)

I posted this question to the Mail forum and it seems to have disappered %-)
I also posted the question on the Free tech support side and just recieved a message that the case was going to be closed because of inactivity .
Can you help me ??
