How can I remove the annoying Mac OS X start-up sound.

you cannot remove it but you can mute it

Download StartUpSound.PrefPane from http://www5e.biglobe.ne.jp/~arcana/index.en.html. Then, you can go into System Preferences --> Startup Sound --> Mute.
