Any way to safely read a Mac drive on a PC?

Is there a way to read a Mac HFS+ volume on a PC? I know I could format it as FAT32, but that's incredibly slow on a Mac then.

I use MacDrive, works great in firewire mode...

I've got a USB Maxtor 40GB that I plug into my DELL server all the time no issue.
