anybody using 9.4gb dvd-ram drives?

a while back i picked up a 9.4gb firewire dvd-ram drive (double-sided drive with two heads and can read both sides of the removable disk at the same time) to use as a backup drive ... OS9 interacted with it perfectly, but OSX still sees it as a 4.7gb drive. i figured it was just a matter of time before an OS upgrade would recognize the drive correctly. now i'm suspecting that either (a) it's never going to happen or (b) the drive in question is not supported but others may be.

is anybody out there talking to a 9.4gb dvd-ram drive in OSX? if so, which one? this is a hitachi GF-2000 in side a QPS enclosure.
 
I am thinking about buying DVD-ram (LaCie multidrive seems appealing to me, i want to be able to store up to the 9.4 Gb) but I have been told about problems with the double side media, my retailer doesn´t have much info about this drive. What´s your experience so far with OSX -wich I run on my PBookG4667- and double sided media? znks
