Artifacts appear when playing DVD movies

Hi,
This has been happening for sometime.
Whenever I play a DVD movie on my Mac,
I get this weird greenish artifacts on screen.
I'm using Apple's DVD player software.
Why is this? DVD software problem?
Graphics card? Anyway to fix this?

Only when I restart the machine will the
DVD play normally. This is only happening
with my Powermac, no problems playing DVD's
on my Powerbook and both are running 10.3.4.

Thanks

Hi Ailes and welcome to the forum!
DVD software problem? Try vlc and let's see if you have the same issues. If yes, then it has nothing to do with player.
Graphic cards? Does this kind of greenish thing on your display show up any other time when you are not playing back DVDs? I know of similar artefacts to show up when the graphic card is heated up (I was overclocking the gpu and saw those marks). How does your screen behave when you run some opengl graphics such as few screensavers or any 3d game?
Btw, did you ever try to redirect the picture to your tv and see, if you still have those marks (if you have such kind of tv-out)?

Thanks,
Artefacts (sorry for the spelling error, English is my second language)
only show up when using the Apple DVD software,
It looks like one of those "matrix" screensaver but with short green lines
instead of numbers. I dont see artefacts when I run Maya, Shake or Photoshop
and neither do I see it when my screensaver comes on ( Fluid Effects by Concept House).

I tried playing the movie using vlc, no artefacts but now theres no sound!
I got this error:

coreadio:failed to set buffer size:[nope]

The Funny thing is I checked with my powerbook and both the Apple DVD
player and vlc played the disc fine. My PowerMac is a G5 w/ ati Radeon 9600 pro.

thanks again

I see your problem is rather software based than hardware. Did you repair permissions by now? Another thing I love to add (Randman loves me repeating this over and over again): add a new useraccount on your powermac and try the dvd playback on that account. Does it work properly?

Yes I've already repaired permissions (from OSX startup disc)
and I've also logged on as another user, results, still the same,
artefacts w/ apple DVD soft and no sound w/vlc ( I've even re -installed vlc).

As usual, after restarting, It played the DVD just fine. then I found out
that once I start watching a .avi or .mov movie file and I tried to watch
a DVD movie after that with Apple DVD, the images become corrupted again.

would trashing Apple DVD and then re-installing it be a good idea?

How would you completely trash apples DVD? I have the feeling this problem is codec based. Just deleting the app won't help you much. What if you trash this file:
com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist which is in your home/Library/Preferences folder?

Thanks a lot Zammy-Sam, DVD software working great now.
Sorry for sounding silly, but what did I just do? delete Apple DVD's
preference? ..just so I know next time.
I really appreciate you helping me on this, Thanks again.

Actually you helped yourself, Ailes. ;)
Deleting the plist files of certain apps in the home/Library/Preferences folder is like "reinstalling" the app. Happy it solved your problem.

Greetings. I did some research awhile back after I intermittently encountered green artifacts (matrix effect) on DVD playback. It would never do it after a fresh boot. However, after opening other apps and having the computer running for a bit they would appear again using only Apple's DVD player. Someone suggested it was a problem with the memory modules that shipped with my G5. So I removed them and only use non-factory installed memory. Viola! No more green artifacts on playback since mid-July when I took them out. Hope this helps.
