CUPS is awesome and I am using gimp-print to print over my wireless network via print server. That I can do this at all with a printer that does not have OS X drivers is a miracle.
Unfortunately, big-ish print jobs (~100 PDF pages)
1) take forever and
2) crash my system (full lock-up).
The crashes are not regular, but I get some funny screen artifacts (ghosting) at the end of big print jobs, looks like corruption. (see pic)
This seems to have started with 10.2.5, although admittedly, I rarely had to do big print jobs under earlier version of Jag.
After one spectacular crash (full system freeze -> i.e no "#-option-esc") the corruption continued after shutting the Mac down and rebooting. It was only cleared by a fsck-y and 2nd reboot.

I am just sharing these experiences to see if anyone else has encountered this.
Also gimp-print over my wireless network is hellishly slow. Any tips?
