Booting in macosx or OS 9.......

Is there a keyboard command you could use so when you startup the computer you could choose which system you want to boot up? I've read a few books and it says that if you hold the option key, it would open startup manager and from there you could choose which system. I've tried it but it doesn't seem to work w/ my comp. Do I have any other options? MACOS X and MAC OS 9 are on different partitions.

G3 BW 350mhz, 448ram
 
I am currently running osx and os9 on different partitions on my g4 and the option key works for me. It allows me to choose which system to start up from.
