I JUST GOT MY iPOD PHOTO!

Anyhow, it is charging, via the dock. How long is it that I have to leave it... 5 hours?

Can I upload music while I am doing so? I understand I can charge the iPod off my Powerbook, is this safe?

Thanks!

Yes, you can upload while it's charging the first time. After you're done, just unmount the iPod but let it stay connected and it'll charge.
If your PB is running on battery, charging the iPod will draw on the battery as well.

That seems a little fast, but not outrageous:

Most Lithium-ion batteries use a fast charge to charge your device to 80% battery capacity, then switch to trickle charging. That’s about two hours charge time to power iPod to 80% capacity, then another two hours to fully charge iPod, if you are not using iPod while charging. You can charge all Lithium-ion batteries a large but finite number of times, as defined by charge cycle.

The iPod ships with the battery charged part-way, so that's probably why it charged in less than 4 hours.

Another tip: don't let the PowerBook go to sleep while charging the iPod. If the PowerBook is asleep, then the iPod won't charge off of the FireWire port. And, as Radman said, it's best to keep the PowerBook plugged into some power source (not running on battery) while charging the iPod.
