can no longer log in!!!

i changed my passwd using the "passwd" command and now i can no longer log into my account. do you have to change your password within system preferences for it to work? is there any way i can get back into my account? i have tried my new password as well as the old...nothing works...does anyone have any ideas?

AFAIK, the only way to change your user password is from the OS X installer CD. Any other method gives you exactly this type of problem.
