crash during backup

Hello,

I'm trying to back up certain files to an external hard drive. I have a new (unibody) MacBookPro running 10.6.2. The destination is a 1TB FireWire 800 (well, it has multiple connection types) drive from OWC that I partitioned using Disk Utility with GUID Partition Table (200GB for possible windows files, 800GB for the Mac - Mac OS Extended (Journaled) ). When I do this I turn off the energy saver and screen saver so nothing should sleep.

First I wanted to backup my iTunes music - that's about 120GB. It would crash if I tried to copy over the whole folder, but doing it a few folders at a time, I got everything backed up.

But I also have a virtual machine for windows XP that I want to back up. It's about 28GB. So after anywhere from 5 to 15 GB is done copying, the computer will freeze.

Oh, I'm doing it by hand like this because Time Machine would crash, too. I had the Genius Bar get it going once, but after I copied my music to my nice new laptop (I ripped something like 1500 cds - ugh! - to my previous mac) it went back to freezing. Then when you restart, what excitement that is! It has trouble finding the startup drive. Once it didn't find anything. I was practically in a panic, as I need this computer to get paid. So I don't touch TimeMachine with a gazillion foot pole.

Oh, I've also tried DropDMG (running with root access) - I wanted to create a disk image with multiple segments (so I could copy over smaller pieces), but it fails to create the disk image - giving this error: "Error 1 - hdiutil: create failed - Operation timed out" Oh, well.

Anyway, any help?
