every time i restart my imac it creates a new user so it looks like default settings, all my stuff is still there but its under my normal account. WHat do i do to stop this? Im VERY new to macs by the way.

Sounds like there are two users set n the machine and the other user is set to auto-login. Go to system preferences/accounts and how many accounts are listed?

it started with one, i bought it used so i changed the name on the account. now there a users listed. there is one with a circle icon that is my name, there is one with a house icon with the name of the person i bought it from, then there are 2 that look like empty folders with names that look like random numbers and letters. if i restart it though there will 3 that look like empty floders

Uh, yeah...You are really not supposed to change the name on the account or else all kinds of bad things happen like change your account type to standard and lock you out of your files and settings. Its a Unix permissions thing. Fixing it depends on what version of OSX you are running and really should be done by a Guru Mac type (and not your typical Apple store genius) because it involves enabling the root user then going into netinfo manager or directory utility and making changes. I've done it for customers and mostly know what to do, but there is no way in the world I would try walking someone through it by means of forum direction, especially if you don't even know what root is.

that sounds helpfull hahha i have had it renamed for a few weeks, i dont know why it would do this out of nowhere. thanks for your help!
