Customization of date/time menu item in Snow Leopard

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, it seems like we lost the capability to customize the date/time System Menu item as extensively as we used to be able to do in Leopard.

In that previous OS version, we could customize a date/time format in the Language & Text formatting section, and we could copy and paste that format to an area in the Date & Time preferences to control exactly how the date and time appears in the System Menu. But now in Snow Leopard, we seem to have lost that capability.

It's true that we have more customization checkboxes for the date and time System Menu item, but I miss the ability to customize the date and time exactly the way I want. For example, I really prefer it to look like this: 2009-09-18 Fri 01:23:45, which was easy for me to set up under Leopard.

So are we now out of luck in Snow Leopard with regard to this level of date/time customization, or is there some new way of doing this?

Thanks in advance.
