dvd multiregion; VLC won't work

I travel back and forth between US and UK and have DVDs from regions 1 and 2. I cannot change my region anymore on the macbook without it being the last change allowed. I downloaded VLC and went to system/preferences and changed the instruction to open VLC (instead of DVD player) when DVD inserted. All good, but when VLC opens I get a screen with the name of the movie and then it goes away. The application does not close, but rather the screen with the video goes away and I'm left just with the little control device (play, forward, etc). Help appreciated. Tks, Ken
