freeze on startup

geez o pete
help! i'm having problems getting my osx to start up. my hard drive had 2 partitions, and i was running system 9 out of one, and 10 out of the other. they worked fine for a couple days, and all of a sudden, they both started to freeze on startup. 9 was just having extension conflicts, and i've gotten that all straightened out, but 10 is still giving me problems. it'll start up, and right after my happy mac disappears, a grey screen pops up, and there it stays. it'll start up if i hold down the shift key.

does anyone have any idea what's going on here, or what i can do to fix it?

There is the usually stuff

Disk first aid both partitions - boot off of a system CD to repair the 9 partition if needed (you can verify while booted off the 9 partition)

Reset parameter ram - boot with "command-option-P-R"

If you are on a portable there is a tiny rest button that resets more parameter RAM.

What happens when you do hold down the shift key?

well, i had spent three hours on the phone with tech support previously, and they never suggested resetting my pram. i did it, and it appears to have worked! :D

thank you sooooooo much jove!

back in action!
