ftp server 'dropped out'

Hi there,
A 'funny' thing that happened to an OSX server FTP function.

Server has been running for more than 6 months without problems (including the FTP service).
Server does ordinairy file sharing as well as FTP.
The users on the internal side of the system can access their own folders, the common folders and (most often) all the folders on the FTP part.

FTP-connected users can (most often) only connect to their 'own' folder on the FTP part.

The server suddenly decided to 'cut off' the FTP access.
If one tries to access the FTP from the outside, it seems like the FTP client connects and negotiates (some time passes) but never gets access.
If one shuts down the FTP server while a client is trying to access - the client correctly displays: The server is no longer listening or has shut down'

Previously there has been minor problems with a faulty Firewall, but that is fixed now.

Any good ideas out there ?
