G5 PowerBooks by year's end?

That's not exactly new, though. The 970FX is 'near' PowerBook use. We'll see what Apple thinks about it after the next round of Powerbooks comes along, which is believed to be the last G4 PowerBook round. Black PowerBooks once more? Why not. Tastes like Power. :)

i wish they could at least improve the current powerbooks.
im really lookin into buyin a 12 inch powerbook these days, but im hesitant/afraid to buy one and see new ones released in a month or so!

Personally, in my opinion, Apple will released updates to the current line this July and then release the PowerBook G5 at the MacWorld, Jan 2005.

Apple will only release the PowerBook G5 at an major venue, which are only a few a year. This will generate lots of press etc.

Do you think that Apple will release the PowerBook G5 like mid-June, without any major events or venue; think not.

Personally, I don't think that Apple will be releasing the PowerBook G5 this year. I think that Apple Engineers have the problem of 'heat' to solve. Remember the first rounds of PowerBooks G4's!

Also, I don't think that the unit will be 1 inch think either.

As for the colour of the casing, I hope that they stay with the silver/Aluminium/Titanium effect. This will tire in with the G5 desktop effect.

Maybe all the edging will be in the cheese grater effect?

My top question is thou, what inital speed will the PowerBook G5 be released at?

I say 1.6GHZ...

I agree with cockneygeezer on the difficulty of keeping the form factor at 1" thin. cooling the g5 will be tricky. but after reading that linked article, the wattage the chip will use is MUCH lower than current versions, so that will play a big role in keeping the laptop from burning legs/laps...

cheese grater sides would be kinda cool...just keep the ports on the sides and not the back. that's all i ask.
and go big or go home - debut the g5 pb's at 2ghz!!!!

maybe I'm dreaming, but I hope I'm somewhat right on that last part.
how hot (no pun intended) would that be to have a 2ghz g5 pb with 2-4gb ram? :drooling like homer simpson:

Well, speed depends on when it comes. If Apple would bring the G5 to the PowerBook now, 1.4-1.6 GHz would be more than okay, I think. Much better than the 1.33 GHz PowerBook G4. If it's Autumn and we have 3 GHz PowerMac G5s (dual processor, too!), then 1.6 just doesn't sound that good any more. ;-) If it's January 2005, a 1.6 GHz PowerBook G5 sounds just lame.

However, the G4 processor _has_ life in it, and the PowerBooks are selling well although the iBooks have got a G4 now, too. If the G4 can go to 1.8 GHz as promised, the iBooks can still have some room to breathe below the PowerBook specs.

I've been allocated money at my job to purchase myself a "work" laptop to replace my 1GHz PBG4 from home. I just can't bring myself to purchasing another G4. My laptop is plenty fast, so the G5 is a must for me. Its actually a must with most IT people I know in the area, so all of us wait.

Take it from a marketing point, even. Jobs was on stage at the WWDC saying how the G4 can handle 12(?) instructions per cycle, while the G5 handles 217(?)? It was a gross difference. I can't see spending pro type money on a laptop that should be a desktop replacement when its nowhere near the same power.

In its brief 'Quick Reference' guide, IBM describes the typical working power consumption of the 970FX as: "12.3W@1.4GHz, or 24.5W@2.0GHz" – potentially more impressive, and much less that the current processor's typical power needs of 51W@1.8GHz.

im just wonderin what the power consumption of a 1.33ghz G4 is right now. any1 know ?

I got the first G4 12" and personally I kind of like the heat. As long as the G5 isn't scalding I don't see a problem. This is kind of off topic (sorry) but Go3Iverson we have the same last name. Maybe related mac users....

I hope apple won't change much on the design. Simply love the alubooks look. And I hope they will think of a multiburner for the superdrive. I surely will be the first one buying a G5 powerbook. Just waiting for it to come out. And I hope they will use the faster ram and graphiccard much more efficient. In my opinion there is a lot of wasted performance even in the current books...

With the advances in technology from month to month, here is a logical guess on what the new PowerBook G5 should roll out with:

1.6GHz G5 chip.
(Less MHz than the desktop, so therefore, less heat, less power from the battery, longer batery life etc, etc, etc)

80GB Hard drive.
This is the biggest that Apple offer, and I can't see it getting any bigger in the near future.

ATI 9x00 Mobility Chip 128MB
Whatever the latest ATI mobility chip is out at the time.

4 x DVD=+R Slot loader SuperDrive
It's 2x at the moment, so you could make a logical guess that it will be 4x by Jan 2004. Also, with the ever increasing demand for multi-format drives, Apple has to offer this solution to the users. Personally, Apple will stick with the DVD-R format, like they have stuck with the one-button mouse.

Other:

• two RAM slots.
• Bluetooth
• Airport Extreme
• Backlit keyboard

Personally, I think that the G5 laptop will only be offered at 15" or 17" configurations, 15" at a stretch.

Apple might only offer the PB G5 at 17" due to heat issues etc, or as a sheer marketing aspects. Lets be honest, can you really see a 12" G5 PowerBook? Maybe in 2007...

Whatever the spec, whatever the MHz of the CPU, the PB G5 machine will sell and as tradition, demand will forecast supply.

I for one will be buying one. I just hope that it's not big and bulky...

So what, does MWNY not count anymore? It's always in June or July.

And at some point, who among us would have envisioned the 12" or the 17" Powerbook G4's, or the G4 Powerbooks at all? I think Apple will keep all 3 sizes for the G5 laptop because people want the choice.

I wonder if it would come in the 12? If so, it might likely be as the G4 iBooks where the 12 stops at 800, while the 14 goes to 1 Ghz. I'd seriously consider getting a G5 PB (especially in black), but I think I'd have to get a 15 (or even consider a 17) for that bump in computing power.

I don't think Apple will go back to black.

a) People recognise the black WallStreet PowerBook G3s in OLD movies now - people don't want their new computer to look like something people had in 1998 or something.

b) Black has Dell associations

c) Brushed metal for power users and white for home users suits the entire GUI of the Mac OS X environment.

And what a GUI it is :).

But something will be needed to ID the G5 PBs from the G4s (other than the :D on the users' face), and I seriously doubt Apple will go with the mini-iPod colored metal look.

Since the venue for this has been moved to Boston, Apple is adament about not having a presence at the show. This leaves the WWDC in which major project announcements would be made (I believe also in June/July).

If we are looking at a summer release for anything, I imagine it would be at WWDC like they did with the G5 last year.
