General - Crashing Apps, what to do?

Hey guys, I have been having a lot of trouble over the last week. Geh.

Anyway. Suddenly my mailapp is crashing on me on startup. I'm on 10.3.

What do you do when these sort of things happen? It starts up, checks the mail,
and crashes, and sends a report. That's all she wrote.

It seems to crash as soon as I look at the inbox.

Wow. Same thing just happened with iChat.

Yikes. My system is sketchy!
 
Open Applications->Utilities->Disk Utility. Select your OS X drive and push Repair Permissions. OS X is Unix based so a OS X user should repair permissions every major software install or a least every two weeks. Also, boot from your install disk and launch Disk Utility and repair the disk.

If neither answer doesn't repair the problem maybe you should try a Disk Repair Utility. IMHO DiskWarrior is the best repair Utility for the Mac OS X system. I can't count how many times this program has fixed problems (I've created through many of my hacks) exactly like you described! Good Luck.
 
Boot from your OS CD and run Disk Utility to repair your disk.

You can also run fsck;

To run fsck, you first need to start up your Mac in single-user mode. Here's how:

1. Restart your Mac.

2. Immediately press and hold the Command and "S" keys.

You'll see a bunch of text begin scrolling on your screen. In a few more seconds, you'll see the Unix command line prompt (#).

You're now in single-user mode.

Now that you're at the # prompt, here's how to run fsck:

1. Type: "fsck -y" (that's fsck-space-minus-y).

2. Press Return.

The fsck utility will blast some text onto your screen. If there's damage to your disk, you'll see a message that says:

***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****

If you see this message--and this is extremely important--repeat Steps 1 and 2 again and again until that message no longer appears. It is normal to have to run fsck more than once -- the first run's repairs often uncover additional problems..

When fsck finally reports that no problems were found, and the # prompt reappears:

3. Type: "reboot" to restart,

or type "exit" to start up without rebooting.

4. Press Return.


If this doesn't help, DiskWarrior would be a very good investment.
 
I'm having similar problems myself that I simply do not know how to debug and/or fix the issues. The other day I had Safari crash on me for the first time (I'll post the crash log below) since my last reinstall. I chose to reinstall because after I kill'd BitTorrent remotely in ssh, it refused to work again. Nonetheless, after I restarted my powerbook once again, it refuses to work.

It seems that anytime after a program crash, they refuse to work properly again until I reinstall, and I'm getting a bit sick of doing that. I've attempted to reinstall the programs - no dice.

Safari once used to remember my cookies, logins, passwords, form data, etc. but now it just won't. Even if I explicitly check the "Remember username and password" it will not. Another problem with Safari is, I have a webmail client that has an iframe that auto refreshes about every 10 seconds, and if I'm scrolling down on another window, the other window that is currently refreshing appears to scroll down with it (very annoying). I don't know if there's any resolution to this or not, but I'd like to find one.

To the best of my knowledge, no settings have changed, and no software has been installed too recently. Things used to work, now they just seem to go down hill and break :(

I've tried to do what people have suggested such as the fsck in single user mode (did not help), the repair permissions in the Disk Utility (did not help), and I do not know what to do anymore. I submit my crashes to Apple everytime, but have no idea if that is helping or not. If anyone has some suggestions on what I can do to hopefully resolve or debug these programs and figure out why they are behaving so strangely, that would be awesome.
