Hard crash with restart warning

Every day, maybe two or three times I get a hard crash (Freeze) that displays a restart warning ...

I know the pics terrible, but the words say "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button."

I've unplugged things and tried to work out which app it could be but I'm getting nowhere. Is there a log that could help with the source of the problem, or an application that could help point to the source?

I have no problems in OS9 so I'm guessing it's not actually a hardware issue such as memory etc. This problem is occuring in 10.3 but also happened in 10.2

that is a kernel panic.

what happened before you started getting these? what mac do you have? have you added new peripherals, hard drives, mice, drives, ram? new programs?

look for a file called panic.log in your home folder. copy the content of it, send it to apple feedback. maybe paste here if you want (save it as a .txt file for that please .. and if it's really long, just the past 20 k will be fine).

Im having panic problems too, mostly when Im using Safari or Mail.

Sometimes I dont get the friendlly message pictured above. Instead, I get lots of lines of CLI-like code knocked out in black and white on the screen, accompanied by a freeze.

Where should I send my panic logs to? They look pretty cryptic... only thing I recognise is the date/time and the name of the OEM graphics card.

There are quite a few things that can cause this. But it's worth noting that kernel panics are not common.

I've only had four in all of the time I've run OS X since the beta.

Have these panics only started recently?

Have you recently installed some new ram?

Have your recently installed some software that adds a kernel extension?

Are you running some old peice of hardware; scanner, scsi card et cetera?

I have had no problems on this new 1ghz PB since I got it two months ago, until the last three days... I've had the new-style and old-style panics something like 14 times now.

Nothing new at all... it just started happening Sunday night, while surfing the same forums in Safari, and continued to happen when using Safari, and occasionally when ccomposing in Mail.

I did finally do the latest security update, and iCal, but otherwise, Im using the latest of everything from Apple.

Well, with your short description, it's hard to tell what's going on. Have you tried to repair permissions (Applications->Utilities-Disk Utility)? Also, if you are able, look at this set of trouble shooting hints. Maybe you should try these to see if any help. Good Luck.

I have done the permissions, crons, DS store cleanups, and a few other optimizing utils, but nothing helped.

So I'll check the hints...

Now that it has happened 3 more times, I see that when I use Safari, I get the "new style" panic with the polite message, and when Im using Mail I get tht "old style" panic, CLI-like text running down the screen.
