how do i open up a firewall port for personal file sharing?

i checked off personal file sharing under sharing in system preferences, but it doesnt seem to let my friend (who has a Mac) to connect. is there a port i can open or anything i can do?
 
The firewall port should open automatically. When you start a service, an explanation should appear in the bottom of the sharing services preferences explaining how you connect to the service.
Are you on the same local network, or are you trying to connect over the Internet?
