Questions for Formating an External DRIVE...

My needs:
  1. Storage for large file transfer (FAT32 will not work...4gig max).
  2. Protected Storage.
  3. Need a small space for WINDOWS files.
  4. Recommended Partition Sizes for a 400 gig drive.

Under the Partition options in the Disk Utility, what should my ultimate choice be? -------
  • Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
  • Mac OS Extended
  • Mac OS Extended (Case-Sensitive, Journaled)
  • Mac OS Extended (Case-Sensitive)
  • UNIX file-system
  • MS-DOS file-system
  • FREE SPACE

Also... Is it necessary or recommend to use or create RAID?

If anyone wants to tackle this, step by step i would really appreciate it.

Best Regards,

Yea since Microsoft will not open NTFS to outside companies (Mac, Unix & Linux) we Mac users are stuck with Fat 32 in sharing disks. However through the darwin project apple released OS X Extended to the open source community. So the enterprising people over at MediaFour created a software (for Windows) to read/write (even with long file names) Mac OS X Extended.

It may not be for everyone, but it is a viable solution for an external hard disk you want to share with Windows.

Satcomer... what's up? You seem to come to the rescue each and every time... Thanks.
The EXTERNAL Drive works well with a OS-X Extended Partition and mounted disk images. There are no problems with large files and it's quick with the fire wire... even though it's 400 on the macbook... but it seems faster with the 1gig ram upgrade and i just detailed it... (like a clean car... it works better).

Thanks again Satcomer...
