I come in peace...

Hello all!

I am the very recent owner of a PowerBook G4 from a friend who has since upgraded. I have been a PC user my entire life; I run linux and Winblows at home, and have only used a Mac once before. :p

These are the specs of the system:

Machine Model: PowerBook G4 12"
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 768 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.7.5f1

It is currently running OSX 10.3.9, which I've found to be a major impediment for my web-design courses, as most web design programs require 10.4 or higher. What should my focus be as far as upgrades? Should I just get a more recent version of OSX? Can this computer handle a newer OS?

Thanks in advance!

My recommendations, in a nutshell:

- Upgrade to Mac OS X 10.4. Make sure any disk you purchase is a "retail" copy, and not a gray-colored, system-specific copy (that won't install on your computer).
- Max out the memory.
- Get a bigger, faster hard drive.
- Obtain a fresh battery.

Of course, all of these things together might make upgrading cost-prohibitive, as you may be three-quarters of the way to a brand new computer when you add them all up. The list above is prioritized by what I perceive to be your "necessities," in descending order, and I would recommend doing them without skipping items in the list.

You may be able to get ahold of Leopard (10.5 -- not Snow Leopard, 10.6) cheaper than Tiger (10.4). Your machine is compatible all the way up through 10.5.8. Rumor has it that if you call Apple and ask nicely, they'll tell you that they do, in fact, still sell it. It will probably cost $129.
