Is the G5 PIG UGLY?

Is the G5 PIG UGLY? YES! It reminds me of an old 1960s stereogram. Eeeeeuuuuuww!

The G4 Quicksilver is without a doubt the best-looking box Apple ever produced.

Yes, the G4 is very nice looking, but I think the G5 has a quality all its own. At first, it kind of reminded me of a cheese grater....until I actually saw one "in the flesh," if you will. :p I have to say that it is a gorgeous case, something I've come to expect with Apple. Check out the other thread on the PC cases and how they mimic the Apple design. First it was the colors, then it was the graphite, not the brushed metal. I guess imitation IS the sincerest form of flattery. ;) Now if only they could do it in a flattering form. :p

I am still a fan of the 6100! maybe not the best looking, but it was small (could be called a problem though) and easy to work on/add things and for the day very smooth looking.

I wonder if they are as badly laid out internally as any other PC. The thing that I DO like about the G5 (and the G4, for that matter) is that everything is easily accessible and easy to use.

I have a PC at home. It's less than a year old, but PC manufacturers seem not to have learned the lesosns that Apple have learned, so even something as simple as adding extra RAM involves screwdrivers, swearing and blood squishing from the multiple cuts and slashes from trying to do anything at all inside the damned thing!

It's just the front of the G5 I'm not keen on –*"stereogram" and "cheese grater" are two of the kinder descriptions I have heard.

I agree.
I don't think that the G5 is a beautiful computer.
I remember getting my first B&W. I arranged my desk so that I (and everyone else) would be able to see it. The B&W got lots of ooohhs and aaahhhhs.
When I got a Quicksilver it was the same thing.
My all time favorite is the Cube. That has to be one of the best looking computers ever. I displayed mine as a piece of art.
My G5 is not displayed at all. I have it hidden behind my 2 monitors. It looks more like an appliance than a thing of beauty.

The G5 is very sturdy and industrial looking, but not by any means an aesthetic triumph.

I suspect the design of the case was a necessary compromise to provide adequate ventilation for the very hot-running G5 processor. They needed lots of vent holes, and a material strong enough to stay rigid with so many holes in it.

maybe the redesign of the G5 case might be something along the lines of what they accomplished with the iMac G5? I'm sure, as brianleahy mentioned, that the current design was to accomodate the G5 when it came out, but there have been some revisions to the G5 processor recently, and more to come in the near future from the looks of it. If they can make it run cooler than originally designed (and I'm sure they have already to an extent), a redesign of the case might be coming in the future. I just hope they don't get rid of the brushed look. I quite like it.

I have to disagree with you all. I think the metal look and the whole appearance of the g5 tower, and the new LCD's is very professional looking. Yes it has lots of holes. whoopie.

G5's sooo sexy man.

As for the internal layout? It's amazing. Have you seen the shots from the apple site or seen one in person at all? When I got mine the first thing I did was open it up to install more RAM, my jaw dropped when I saw the sexy G5 heat syncs and the near cableless layout was. PC's even tricked out PC's don't even come close.

Personally, the front of the G5 reminds me of those ceramic space heaters.

I admit when I was a PC lover I hated how the Powermac looked. Then I went to PC world, and, I lost my words when I saw it, it really did amaze me. It's a beautiful thing.

I like everything Jonathan Ives has designed (it took me a second take for me to like the iMac G5, though). It's just classy. It's not tizzy and it's not overly utilitarian. It's classy, and that's why Apple gets so many oohs and aahs. Still, when people come into my room, they think the iMac G3 looks better than my PowerBook, since it's colourful. But to each their own :p.

I think that the G5 tower is amazing. I dont really like the front of it, and maybe it could've been abit smaller like the G4 tower was but still it is amazing. Apple always strives to be original and without hardly any visible cables inside that machine i think they did a great job ! :p

The G5 tower and a Display is a really profesional looking machine. I prefer the look of the quicksivler g4 over the outside of the new G5 but inside the G5 is just amazing. I remember first seeing it in a apple centre and thinking it was like a bomb or something, its literally so sophisticated inside that thing.
