iTunes -48 Error code

All of a sudden, when trying to import a cd, I get this message.

"Error occured while converting the file "insert track one name here". An unknown error occurred (-48)."

Possibly related, possibly not, but when trying to move anything from my iBook to my external harddrive, it won't go, coming up with Error Code -8065

Any advice would be much appreciated.
 
It might be a permissions problem. Run the repair permissions function in Disk Utility and see if that helps.
 
When I select the external harddrive in Disk Utility, the Permissions boxes are greyed out. When I click on Verify Disk, it says that the keys are out of order and the disk needs repaired. I can access files on the ext. hd but cannot write to it.

If i repair the disk using Disk Utility to I run the risk of losing files? Thanks for your help.
